Quartz. Natural Crystals, Lore and Science
Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's crust. There are many different varieties of quartz, in many colors, several of which are semi-precious gemstones. Pure quartz, traditionally called rock crystal, is colorless and clear. It has been referred to as the "ice of the gods". Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder wrote that it was ice frozen so hard that it could never unthaw.
Quartz has been recognized as having extraordinary physical and metaphysical properties. It is piezoelectric: a crystal develops positive and negative charges on alternate prism edges when it is subjected to pressure or tension. The charges are proportional to the change in pressure. Properly cut plates of quartz are used for frequency control in radios, televisions, and other electronic communications equipment and for crystal-controlled clocks and watches.
Today, we know that all things in the universe are forms of energy with their own frequency and vibration – including crystals. Nikola Tesla declared this concept as key to understanding the universe. He proved how certain forms of energy can alter the vibrational resonance of other forms of energy. Intriguing isn't it?
Quartz is also quite hard with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs Scale.
Australian and Oceanian shamans considered it a stone of light broken off from the celestial throne.
The Egyptians saw the quartz crystal as being a generator and would place it inside an oblisk for use. It was used to harness the energy of the sky, sun, and stars above.
Quartz is also called the "Universal Crystal". Metaphysical properties of quartz are thought to be power, clarity, psychic intuitiveness, dreams, love, and more.
It is said that clear quartz can be used for cleansing and clearing what no longer serves so that one's energy can be freed up to create and flow forward in life.
It's beautiful in all shapes and many collectors have dozens of examples of quartz crystals in their natural crystal foms as well as polished specimens. Choose your quartz crystals, jewelry and dishes from our curated selection with confidence.
