Topaz - Did you know?

Topaz actually has an exceptionally wide color range that, besides golden brown, includes various tones and saturations of blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, and purple?

Topaz is allochromatic, meaning that its color is caused by impurity elements or defects in its crystal structure. The element chromium causes natural pink, red, and violet-to-purple colors in topaz. Imperfections at the atomic level in it's crystal structure often creates yellow, brown, and blue color. Brown is a common topaz color, and the gem is sometimes mistakenly called “smoky quartz.”

Loved by many, it is found mainly in Brazil, Nigeria and Sri Lanka, the name of this gemstone is likely derived from the island of Topazos, in the Red Sea.  Ancient Egyptians believed the stone was colored in a golden hue from the glow of the sun god Ra, and thus the stone also provided protection against harm to his faithful followers.  Ancient Greeks believed Topaz had powers to strengthen its wearer and lend invisiblity in cases of emergency.
In the 19th century, pink topaz was discovered in Russia, and the gemstone was so coveted that only the Czar, his family, and those he gave it to were allowed ownership!  Thus the name Imperial Topaz was given for the golden toned topaz. When worn as amulet, it was said to drive away sadness and strengthen the intellect. Mounted in gold and hung around the neck, it was believed to dispel evil charms. Topaz also was thought to change its color in the presence of poisoned food or drink, thus making it a very valuable asset to those royals who wore it.

Yellow Topaz is a birthstone for November, while Blue is a birthstone for December. It is thought to bring prosperity, releases tension, balance your emotions, as well as bringing joy. Quite a statement, but this beautiful stone is up to the task!
